The mission of the Department of For-Hire Vehicles (DFHV) is to protect the public interest by regulating the vehicle-for-hire industry to allow the residents and visitors of the District of Columbia to have safe, affordable, and accessible transportation options.
Summary of Services
The Department of For-Hire Vehicles provides licensing, adjudication, and enforcement services for drivers, taxicab companies/associations, limousine companies, and transportation network companies. For District residents and visitors, the agency provides support such as lost and found assistance, passenger rights education, community outreach, and complaint handling. The agency also operates the DC School Connect program. Additionally, in FY25, DFHV assumed responsibility for the safety regulation of carriers-for-hire, with policies and regulatory frameworks currently under development.
