District to Auction Unclaimed Jewelry, Collectibles Online for Holiday Season

Tuesday, November 16, 2004
The Office of Finance and Treasury will auction unclaimed jewelry and collectibles online through eBay(tm) Tuesday, November 23 through Tuesday, November 30.

(Washington, DC) The District of Columbia Office of Finance and Treasury (OFT) will auction unclaimed jewelry and collectibles online through eBay™ Tuesday, Nov. 23 through Tuesday, Nov. 30, in time for the holiday season. The auction includes more than 40 items, such as a pair of Cartier 18-karat yellow-gold panther cufflinks, a 14-karat yellow solitaire diamond ring, a sterling silver serving spoon, a sterling silver charm bracelet, and a set of nine sterling silver teaspoons.

“Whatever their budget, shoppers can find unique gifts for their loved ones this holiday season through our online unclaimed property auction,” said District Treasurer N. Anthony Calhoun.

Prospective bidders can view a catalog of the items up for bid by going to www.ebay.com and searching under the seller name “districtofcolumbia” (no spaces), or by going to the eBay link in the Unclaimed Property section of the CFO website.

OFT will accept personal checks, money orders and cashier’s checks from winning bidders, but encourages buyers to use eBay’s faster and easier online payment system. The online payment system allows buyers to use Visa or MasterCard.

OFT attempts to locate the rightful owner, through letters and advertisements as well as contact with former employers and relatives, before unclaimed property is sold. When the District auctions property, it means that the rightful owner has failed to claim such property; however, the owner is still entitled to the proceeds from the auction if they file a claim at any time in the future. This has no effect on those who purchase the items up for auction.
