Unclaimed Property

The Office of Finance and Treasury's Unclaimed Property Unit collects and maintains personal assets that are considered lost or abandoned when an owner cannot be located after a specified period of time.

Through mailings and newspaper notices, they attempt to reunite this property with its rightful owners. While the unit successfully returns an average of $6 million a year, it is conducting an outreach program, including visits to nursing homes, non-profits, and churches, to improve public awareness of its efforts.

Any organization interested in setting up an information session with the Unclaimed Property Unit should call (202) 442-8181.

For more information on unclaimed property, visit the Unclaimed Property website.
